|While a submission was returned in April 2000 because of lack of documentation for the given name ''Phyllida/Phillida'', Argent Snail found a citation of a ''Fillida'' who was married in 1620. It therefore appears that the name did appear as a given name early enough to be registerable. ['''Phillida Parker''', [http://sca.org/heraldry/loar/2001/06/01-06lar.html 06/01], A-Ealdoremere]

|Submitted as ''Phyllida Longacre of Ravenglass'', ''Phyllida'' is the accusative singular form of the classical feminine name ''Phyllis''. The earliest citation in English seems to be ''Phillida and Corydon'' by Nicholas Breton (1542 - 1626) who appears to have been trying to translate or at least emulate a poem by Propertius. In the original, the name ''Phyllis'' appears in the Latin accusative (''Phyllida'') and using this in translation is probably a misreading of the correct form of the name. As so often happens, a popular poem or song gave rise to a brief vogue for the name. It seems likely that the submitted form appeared as a given name after our period, so we have changed the given name to the documented period form.
