• Benedict Biscop- Anglo-Saxon noble, introduced Roman reforms into the English church, founded stone churches
• Bernward - Saxon noble, commissioned art, dabbled in architecture
• Catherine of Bologna - 15th cent. Italian Poor Clare nun, painter and manuscript illuminator
• John the Apostle- fisherman, disciple, patron of engravers, publishers, painters, etc. etc.*
• Luke the Evangelist- physician, Gospel writer, inspirer of artists

• Catherine of Alexandria - noble educated virgin gifted in oratory, broken on a wheel

Patron Saints of Illuminators:

• Gregory the Illuminator ? - convertor of Armenia, helped save Armenia from Persian rule, patron saint of Armenia

• Christina of Bolsena- Tuscan martyr, shot by arrows
• Christopher- carried Christ child across a river
• George- as in St. George and the Dragon**
• Hubert of Liege- Flemish nobleman converted while hunting
• Nicholas of Myra- aka Santa Claus
• Sebastian - survived being shot by arrows
