Rorik’s Calontir
Oh the Year was AS 27.
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
A call to arms from the King was sent
To our southernmost shire at our spring event
Chorus:
- Damn them all, I was told
- We marched to Pennsic for Eastern Gold
- We’d swing no blows, drink some beer
- Now I‘m a broken fyrd in a northern shire,
- The last of Rorik’s Calontir.
Well, the King’s Huscarls all cried the town
How I wish I were in Grimfells now!
For 20 brave men all fighters who
would make for him a shieldwall true.
- Chorus
We mustered in at Lilies Six.
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
For sixty days we were Pennsic bound
Singin’ as we marched, a fearsome sound!
- Chorus
On the sixty first day we took the field,
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
Then an Eastern unit five times our size
Was sent to annoy us by surprise.
- Chorus
Our battle plan was a shameful sight.
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
We advanced to the left, we retreated to the right
While the knights hung back to watch our plight.
- Chorus
The Eastern banner fluttered blue and gold.
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
Rank on rank of sword and shield
We met them with glaive and cleared the field.
- Chorus
Their banner and King were ours to take,
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
When 10,000 chux from the wood did flood
And bore us down under fur and blood.
- Chorus
So here I lay in my 40th year.
How I wish I was in Grimfells now!
It’s been six reigns since we marched away
And I just made Shadowdale yesterday
- Damn them all, I was told
- We marched to Pennsic for Eastern gold
- We’d swing no blows, drink some beer
- Now I’m a broken fyrd in a northern shire,
- The last of Rorik’s Calontir.
I wrote this sometime ago with a bit of help from Marcus who used to sing it once in a while. I ran across it cleaning up and thought someone might get a kick out of it. Among the possible tunes this could be sung to, Barrett’s Privateers comes to mind. - Crag Duggan
