Laurel Text[edit | edit source]

by Rhodri

A squall came over the river When the moon was but a sliver As if Andalusia weeping Sent her tears to river sleeping Each bead of shimmering water The land’s love of golden daughter

Asking all from Mecca to here To view bright pearl of Calontir

Alqsar gardens in their splendor Crave her steps so soft and tender The elegance that in palace dwells Envies her pace swift as gazelles Arches and columns sadly stand Missing those adorned by her hand

They ask caliph to lend his ear Hear of bright pearl of Calontir

Through flowing pines a wind so soft Calls those Allah has held aloft Matsu Caliph the falcon’s sword With Elena Calipha’s true accord Ask Their lords and ladies renowned To list words of justice profound

Spoken by crafters of things so dear Attest well bright pearl of Calontir

Garlands of laurels she has earned With flowing skills both taught and learned We cannot list the gifts bestowed As lovely as December’s snow She has increased your kingdom’s worth As though she brought heaven to earth

They now pronounce for all to hear Reward due bright pearl of Calontir

Caliph and Calipha both agree Such gifts must thus rewarded be Let her be adorned in trappings old That recognize such brilliant souls When horses prance and falcons soar Fifty years since the lions first roared.

Behold forever the leaves so dear That adorn bright pearl of Calontir

Behold forever the leaves so dear That adorn bright pearl of Calontir

Rhodri's comments: "Not so much [based on] a particular poem, except the first two lines were pulled from a translation of The Guadalquivir in Flood by Ibn Safar al-Marini, a 12th-century poet. The Guadalaquivir is the river that flows through Seville, December Montecino’s persona’s home. However, I did use the muwashshah poetic style. It's designed to be a poetic representation of a dancer's belt, with the chorus serving as the "belt" and the verses serving as the ornaments hanging from the belt. I can't imagine finding a more appropriate poetic style for Catalina. "

Rat out a Friend[edit | edit source]

This weekend at Calontir's event Horse and Falcons, held in the Barony of Forgotten Sea, it was my honor to witness the elevation of Qadiya Catalina, my first great-granddaughter laurel, to the Order of the Laurel.

Catalina was apprenticed to Her Excellency the Dread Baroness Mistress Eleanor, apprentice to my only apprentice H/E Mistress Jorunn Eydisardottir. Qadiya Catalina was elevated for her expansive knowledge, teaching and enthusiasm regarding all things about the Andulasian culture in period (among other things).

I myself was First Apprenticed and First Laurel daughter to Baron Master Robert of Coldcastle, who Went Ahead this past December. Although greatly missed here on Earth, his legacy lives far beyond us all in his legacy. Each of his apprentices, many now Laurels with apprentices and Laurels of their own lineages, magnificent in their own ways. Congratulations to Catalina and may all welcome her when you see her. Raise a glass and toast to Baron Bob, as well, for his teaching and gentleness is seen in Qadiya, and all of his lineage. ~Aidan Cocrinn, OL. 55th Laurel of Calontir, First Laurel from Baron Master Robert of Coldcastle.
